German banking deal to cost us dearBy Nathalie Thomas UP TO 1,000 jobs are expected to be lost in the UK after Germany's Commerzbank agreed to buy Dresdner in a deal that will transform banking on the continent.
Commerzbank agreed to buy Dresdner from the insurer Allianz for E9.8bn (£8bn) after Dresdner began to struggle during the credit crunch. Both Allianz and Commerzbank will have to stump up a further E1.25bn to cover Dresdner's sub-prime-related losses.
The deal will create the largest bank in Germany by assets and will become a clear competitor for Deutsche Bank, Germany's leading banking giant.
But news of the deal saw Commerzbank shares fall 6% in early trading. The price paid by Commerzbank was E4.2bn less than Allianz paid for Dresdner seven years ago.

Honey, HoneyEmma Barton needs to up her profile now she's out of 'Enders. Getting the pins out is always a good move – maybe there'll be a West End dance debut in the offing. But making herself look like a tiny pinhead by scraping her hair back isn't a good look – though it does possibly explain the bulging, staring (and frankly scary) eyes.
Reach outEmma Barton would have to go some to beat these pins. Mary Wilson may well be convinced that all her, ahem, charms, lie in her top half – but those legs are fab-u-lous.
Quiffed offThere isn't, I don't think, any living soul who could carry off a satin-trimmed velvet smoking jacket other than Raef Bjayou. But is that his normal floppy quiff? It looks suspiciously like a dodge hairpiece.
SPORTFaldo hopes Clarke Cup snub will be "an inspiration"Nick Faldo expects Darren Clarke to continuing his golfing revival because of his Ryder Cup omission, rather than in spite of it.
"I'm sure things like this can be a great inspiration," said Faldo after handing his wild cards for next month's match to Ian Poulter and Paul Casey.
"For Darren he's definitely on the way back and I'm sure he'll get some serious inspiration from that."
As for Montgomerie, five years older than Clarke, Faldo does not seem quite so sure.
He said: "Monty is 45 and it's a tougher push now. I'm not saying any more than that, but it could inspire those guys to want to make the (2010) team or they might start thinking of a captain role."
