THE KILLERS

Day & Age

****

Mercury 1785121, £12.99

After all the old-beyond-their-years toughness of the last album Sam's Town, The Killers show real maturity with this compact polished pop nugget.

'Losing Touch' seduces with parping horns and a stirring guitar motif washing you away on melodic waves. The synth pop of 'Spaceman' is an affectionate nod to vintage Pet Shop Boys and 'Neon Tiger' whistles past the ear like the Bond theme that got away, but this is emphatically a killer Killers' record. The coup de grace is 'Goodnight Travel Well', a touching send off of a song.
