Sandaza 47
CRIES OF "There's only one Paul Sturrock" rang out at Home Park yesterday as both sets of supporters paid tribute to the Plymouth manager. Sturrock, a Dundee United legend and popular among the Argyle fans, revealed last week that he is suffering fro
m a mild form of Parkinson's Disease.

However, it was another silky striker, United's summer signing from Spain, Francisco Sandaza, who stole the show on the pitch. Just two minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute, the former Valencia man danced through the Plymouth defence and clipped home what turned out to be the winner.

United boss Craig Levein had pinpointed this match as the one that would show whether or not his players were ready for the SPL kick-off at Hamilton and, on this evidence, they are.

Their first attack of any note came on 34 minutes when Scott Robertson put Warren Feeney clear but the Northern Ireland striker's shot was easily saved. It was Argyle's turn to threaten on 40 minutes but United goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska palmed away a perfectly-placed header from Plymouth skipper Krisztian Timar.

Both teams made a change at the interval, United introducing Sandaza for Jon Daly, while Arygle changed keepers as Romain Larrieu made way for Graham Stack.

The Tangerines believe they have unearthed a gem in Sandaza and his goal two minutes after the break was certainly a diamond. He collected a pass from Feeney, danced through the home defence then curled a right-foot shot just inside the far post for the only goal of the game.

Plymouth: Larrieu (Stack 45), Duguid, Paterson (Puncheon 58), Timar (Seip 65), Easter, Kuou-Doumbe, Fallon (MacLean 65), McNamee, Sawyer, Summerfield (Folly 72), Mackie (Bolasie 81).

Dundee United: Zaluska, Dillon, Grainger, Wilkie (Kovacevic 72), Dods, Flood, Feeney (Shala 90), S. Robertson, Daly (Sandaza 45), Gomis, Buaben (Swanson 81).

Referee: Steve Tanner.

Craig Levein is building a very good team.
Its all relative though.
Rangers vs Liverpool: 1-1 at half time with first eleven versus first eleven.
Make 5 changes at half-time and you’re flirting with disaster with a squad like Liverpools.

It’s about time we listened to Smith & Strachan’s protestations about the ever widening gulf, but then again, where is the fun in that?

Craig Levein is up against the same thing.

Which SPL team wouldn’t swap places with Hull today?

Ooops wasn't 1-1, Novo failed to make his mark from short range, but the point is the same. They have better squads than we do.

bring them on

no chance, just a bounce match, maybe one camera at best.

The Scotsman should just open up a general footy thread, or just give it up altogether. I'm getting fed up of coming on here to find all the threads closed down. What about you?

BTO, true, true.

So, I reckon Cuellar will be kept off the field on Tues. If we get dumped then he is sold to make up the CL deficiet. If we win, he is back in the team.

Its not pretty, but if you dont get into Europe then you have to feel the hurt.
Ours will be Cuellar going.

Euro song disaster moment...oh, too many to mention.

Gers will scrape through on away goals or as I said last week, penalties, and will do the same in Denmark.

No glory in chasing the euro-dollars eh?

Did it over and over last season.
Walter's face looks like he is spitting wasps today though.
I'm getting used to that expression.

A question Alex....

Are the expectations of Rangers fans for this season unrealistic...because of what happened last season?
8

paulmac,

surrey 03/08/2008 03:16:13
Hot-pants...indeed!

So you don't have any expectations....fair enough!

CALEDONIACO,

The Emerald City 03/08/2008 03:48:48
bto, wtf have you been on the shall we say the asian pi$$ ?
Expectations
Unlikely to win the CL. You got that right!

CIS- doesnae matter, as we have won it too many times already.
How is it going to work out this centaury?
We do have TV instant replay (not like the good old day's) and managers like Mr Levien who ask to many awkward questions.

Scottish Cup- Our name is all over it, and will be this season again.
Mr. Mc Curry and basketballs ring any bells? Mr Bob Dylan sang or wrote The times they are a changing!

SPL- no question. a done deal.
Just like the last three? See my last paragraph for the outcome of this season.

4 In a row coming your way! And you now it!

10

CALEDONIACO,

The Emerald City 03/08/2008 04:59:41
Well let me think for a minute here............. could it be the Championees for the last three years?

Just a wee thought on my part!

bto what hurts you the most, is it loosing out AGAIN to us in the SPL?
Was it getting beat at Aberdeen while we beat Dundee Unt away to lift the SPL crown?

Or was it getting HUMPED in Manchester?

On the other hand, could it be that smith spent 10 Mil last year and another 9 Mil this year so far! (with more to come with Davis)
and you team is still dire!

Fact of the matter is, it is either you or us, and I fancy us BIG TIME. Are you lot READY?

4 In a row coming your way! And you now it, don't you?

11

CALEDONIACO,

The Emerald City 03/08/2008 07:29:33
19, What?

Cracked rearangers crest anyone.

You had better win on Tuesday! READY?

4 In a row coming your way! You know it, don't you?

#21 & 23 - here hear!
DU looked good yesterday. Goal was from a very acute angle & well taken. Impressed by your keeper & the goalscorer but the whole team put in a good shift with Flood working his heart out.
Sorry #3, didn't see any cameras.

Although a Jambo, I have watched Argyle since being down here and went along. Utd were much fitter than Plymouth and they looked organised at the back. Going by what I seen of them yesterday, I reckon Utd will push for Europe again this year.

Ohno, Numb Nuts has woke up.

NN, as I have asked you on many occasions, why not try to be pro Celtc rather than anti Rangers and anti referees.
You might wake up and have something positive to say for the first time in your (sad, sad, sad) life.

I don't know any Gers fans who have any big expectations this season.
I do wonder where the Celts fans' expectations are coming from though.
If you were honest you'd admit that if Rangers hadn't reached the UEFA final the chances were Celtic would have won nothging last season (not knocking it, it was the same for us in 2003, you have to make the most of the breaks).
With no signings at all the same Celtic squad is some how all conquering today.

I predict a short sharp shock.

31 mot juste,Refs have a vital and crucial roll to play in our game.

They certainly had a vital and crucial roll in Celtc winning the league last year.

Its only RFC who get favourable referee decisions, just ask any tic supporter.

It's sad how every football thread on Herald/SoS sites quickly gets hijacked into "Rangers are pure burrilliant and gonnae win the league n'at, by the way!" v "Naw, it's Cellic are pure brilliant, fannnny bawwwws!" mudslinging. Scotland's shame, the two of you.
