The latest buzz in vaccination

A MOSQUITO, genetically engineered so it vaccinates as it bites, has been developed by scientists.

Experts believe "flying vaccinators" could be a radical new way of tackling malaria.

The strategy allows an uncontrolled mass delivery of vaccines via biting insects, although this could raise ethical objections.

"Following bites, protective immune responses are induced, just like a conventional vaccination," said study leader Professor Shigeto Yoshida, of Jichi Medical University in Japan.

In this way, he said, "the insect shifts from being a pest to being beneficial".
