Published Date: 21 September 2008
NEWS of Hearts' own banking crisis broke yesterday morning, when it was reported that a technical glitch meant that the club's players and staff have not been paid this month.
That remained the official line, with "technical reasons" solely to blame and the money to be wired into the players' bank accounts in the next few days. And it was a line that seemed to be bought – so to speak – by the creditors, or players, who, in the way they approached this game, didn't appear to be wracked with worry about where the next meal will come from.

True, they looked hungry, but this manifested itself in the speed of their movement and general eagerness, urged on by the animated and enthusiastic Csaba Laszlo. Yet Inverness also began brightly, with Ian Black enjoying plenty of space in the middle, and posing a danger as he strode forward, feeding the ball to Adam Rooney, who also looked a threat in the early stages.

After seven minutes Hearts struck. Audrius Ksanavicius collected the ball just inside the Caley Thistle half and spotted Saulius Mikoliunas darting across the pitch from his berth on the left. Ksanavicius hit his pass into the right channel, allowing Mikoliunas to continue his cross-field run and gather the ball just outside the box.

Michael Fraser, in the Caley Thistle goal, was foxed, coming to the edge of his box and finding himself in no-man's land. Mikoliunas took one simple touch to wrong-foot him and then slid it past, beating the keeper at his near post.

Ten minutes later Hearts could have doubled their advantage when a long ball from Lee Wallace fell to Michael Stewart with his back to goal in the Caley Thistle box. Stewart turned, stretched and got his foot to it – but Fraser, also stretching, showed great agility to get a hand to it to tip it over the bar.

Caley Thistle showed in flashes that they might be capable of coming back, but Hearts controlled the first half, and it wasn't until the second when the visitors launched a sustained assault.

Hearts lived dangerously, just 1-0 up and with Caley Thistle having seized the initiative, though as Laszlo later pointed out, they didn't create many chances. "Tactically, I give my team ten," he said. "We closed them down very well, they don't have any chances. We closed the door behind us." Craig Brewster agreed: "Hearts defended well; their back four did really well."

Brewster threw on all three of his allotted substitutes in a bid to find the elusive formula, while for Hearts Adrian Mrowiec came on for his debut, replacing a hard-working Stewart, and promptly contributing a lazy touch that might have led to an equaliser.

It never came, leaving Brewster frustrated. "I thought we deserved something," said the Inverness manager. "We played well, there was just a lack of concentration for the goal, but apart from that there wasn't a lot wrong. Maybe in the final third we weren't getting on the end of things, or creating enough. But I've got to be pleased with the performance."

Laszlo sought to stress the tactical triumph behind his side's victory, and noted that "if we win every game 1-0 then I am happy." He deftly deflected a question about Hearts' missing wages, appearing oblivious to the issue, and to the question of whether his money is also still owed. "I must ask my wife," said Laszlo, "she has my bank account. I don't know."

His captain, Christophe Berra, didn't feign ignorance, but seemed reassured by the club's explanation. "We've been assured we definitely will be paid next week," said Berra. "The way I look at it, we've won today – so that's a win bonus."

On the match winner, Mikoliunas, Laszlo offered praise, but noted: "This is job – for this he takes money!" The cheque is apparently in the post.

Poor poor performance, why are we defending on our eighting yard line and panic staitions when the ball comes into our box?We lost our shape and were lucky that ICT did not have the players to take advantage of our defending in the second half.
I think Berra is a good player and will get better with time and may be a great player, but we badly need a leader on the park who can tell all the players to get there fingers out when required.I dont think the likes of Kingston will have much respect for him due to his age.
I think Stewart should be given the job and that will keep him focused on the job too.
On the bright side we would have lost this game 3 months ago so well done the JTs.
JT for life.

"while for Hearts Adrian Mrowiec came on for his debut,"
How can this be his debut when he played last week?

1# Agree with you there mate, Hearts looked like they were holding for the draw and anybody with a decent strikeforce would have equalised. IMHO Stewart is to hot headed to be captain of Hearts, Neilson should have been giving the armband instead of Berra to begin with. BUt now i think that you may be right about Stewart being a Jambo and the one of the only ones who seems to be playing for the shirt.

HHGH!!

Hearts controlled the midfield and defended well - but the lack of a quality goal scorer will be the undoing of all this good work. Good to get a win and go 2nd though - even although it will only last until this afternoon.
5

huggs,

21/09/2008 07:05:01
We are going to get our fingers burnt playing one up front
St Mirren,Motherwell and ICT could all easily have equalised against us
Defending too deep when we are in front and seem to get deeper the longer the game goes
Csaba said he preffers two up front and i thinkits about time he started playing them IMO we are asking too much off young Mole to lead the line week in week out on his own start with 2 up front and hopefully give young Glen a chance
6

GrahamH,

In January when we can sign a striker, it will be a year since these pages have had all fans saying that we need 2 quality strikers.

Will Romanov get this in next few months?

How can a technical glich become a banking crisis?
Not good for the heart but good for the Hearts - good win!!
The end of game performance has to improve dramatically.
Mind - how many actual chances did ICT have?

8. another banker in the know???? . and we see what the bankers have done to us all over the past week!!!!.
to real matters.
good 3 pts - possibly not the best performance, but for now, i'll take 3 pts every week regardless of performance. lets face it. rangers have done this for years.
where we had the largest squad in scottish football history, we are now struggling to get fit players. this is a concern.
desperately needing an out and out goalscorer.

11

jammin 2,

Mike Tullberg should be fit for Dundee Utd game and Bruno Aguar is returning to full training ,Obua and Cesnauskis will be fit again soon so that is a big plus for the team, just hope Tullberg can score some goals or we will have to bring in someone else in january,Mole spends to much having to chase the ball and puts himself out of shooting position .I think Miko should not have been taken off,Exellent passing ,great goal.Have to say that this was not one of Ksanavicius better games, but still done enough to merrit a start.Kingston a wee bit greedy as he is always looking for a WONDER goal when really all goals are goals for the team.Roll on Dundee Utd.

What a job Csaba has done the Scotsman/EEN reporters like him that much that they concur with his summary of the game.(changed days) More reality from previous posters;this was not a good performance.Average in the 1st half & dire in the 2nd.Csaba has got the players working(most of them)but ,despite our lack of options upfront,we cannot go on with expecting Jamie Mole(despite his best efforts)to lead the line on his own.

However it is a further 3 points. Kello was excellent.Berra & Zali improve with every game.Wallace had a better game/Jonson was solid(Q him marking Riordan out of the Derby)....need to get Palaz & Glen into the team ASAP.

#8 take it if you went on mastermind your specialist subject would be the demise of Lith banks due to the global economy?
Take it you are aware that it is UBIG not UKIO who are the principle shareholders in Hearts.
Seen as the GENUINE experts could not predict HBOS demise i doubt very much if snyone has an inside track on UKIO /how that effects UBIG & ultimately the implications for HMFC.

not a classic by any means, a tad jammy to get an early lead, didn't create much thereafter, started to flap like a flag in a gale towards the end when we were very jammy not to concede. it's about time we started to get the luck going our way.

vic motm - karipidis. looking more and more composed on the ball and looking more like a midfielder rather than a CH playing in midfield. covered a lot of ground and broke up a lot of ict play.

jonsson again looked decent at RB, mikoliunas looking more like a workmanlike midfielder and a seasoned pro. played some good balls about. stewart disappointing but he can be excused a quiet game now and then. berra and zaliukas solid at the back until later in the game when they both lost the ability to clear the lines properly. kingston decent but greedy as a fat lad in the tuck shop. ksanavicius lost at sea, mole put in a great shift. kello is no dodgy keeper but the fact that he was signed from kaunas will still cause certain people to hate his guts.

ugly win, acceptable because it's a win. we will play a lot better and lose.

kello 6
jonsson 6
wallace 6
zaliukas 6
berra 6
kingston 5

LOL!!!

the scumday mail have got ksanavicius in the team of the day!!! they also have stewart down for 9/10 but he hasn't made the team of the day!!!

they should go down the route of having someone at the game to mark the players.

Glad to see a win for us today, but when are we going to stop this one striker in front role >:(
18

VictorianGorgie,

21/09/2008 10:41:16
#16 CJ, it's laughable. they've given stewart 9/10 but no place in team of the day. the two central midfielders in it are ksanavicius (who they gave 7/10 to) and neil mccann (who they gave 6/10 to).

yes stewart was subdued and definitely not 9/10.
ksanavicius was nowhere near 7/10.

19

Stotty,

21/09/2008 10:46:54
I thought Ksanavicius played well. He also made the first goal. Personally I think he's a good wee player and he's the only man we have who knows how to play as a second striker. The others tend to get sucked back into midfield leaving us essentially with one man upfront.
20

Talk o' the Toun,

21/09/2008 10:56:15
Stotty: agree he is the only one that understands the position & it was a quality pass that created the goal.

However he is a yard short on pace & far too easily knocked off the ball.Looks more like a 36 year old than a 31 year old to me.

Away from home i think the 5 man midfild is Ok(3 attacking mids supporting lone striker) but need the right front man. Mole has improved greatly but is not that man(Tullberg /a fit Nade ??) .However at home against teams who sit in two up front is a must(opposition happy to see us pass all day). IMO young Glen(stand out for reserves) must be given a run.
21

The Gorgie Boys Are In Town,

21/09/2008 11:04:41
Very pleased with the 3 points and a clean sheet, work in progress and a few players to come into the side so very good win despite this. Driver has been missed but to be fair Miko was man of match for me. Looks like he has his head screwed on again and worked very hard for the team in a diffirent position. ICT are a dangerous side away and we have another home victory to gain confidence from for the next few weeks.
22

Stotty,

21/09/2008 11:05:08
If we played an out and out striker then yes, I'd play Glen. However, based on current tactics (and it seems we're going to stick with them) then I'd play Ksanavicius. Kingston played behind Mole against Falkirk and was anonymous.

On a seperate note, I was very disappointed that Nade didn't start instead of Mole yesterday. Mole does a lot of running, but is completely ineffectual in my opinion.

#31 LF, awright sire. possibly not. he can be useful from time to time. unlike a previous poster i think he sometimes shows a great first touch, it's what he does after that that normally lets him down. very often he makes too casual a pass or hangs on to it too long. he's not a good finisher by any means.

it's past time now that gary glen should be getting a chance. yestreday would have been an ideal game to let him loose.

tullberg will be another option soon, him and mole could end up being a useful pairing. mole has really upped his game this season, his work rate is great and he even sometimes shows a bit of quality with the ball. if he gets regular scoring chances he will polish off a few i'm sure.

34

VictorianGorgie,

Bleeding Heart...,

21/09/2008 11:59:05
#6 GrahamH - don't worry! This was reported in the EEN yesterday...

"Shortlists of future signing targets are currently being drawn up to ensure Hearts are ahead of schedule come January's transfer window and next summer's close season."

Being "ahead of schedule" will be a refreshing change (assuming Romanov endorses this policy).

Being behind schedule, playing catch-up, signing players/hiring managers at the eleventh hour, has sadly been the norm under Romanov's policy of refusing to delegate authority.

But you're quite right - we should have signed a proven striker (or two) before the start of the season. Why can't Romanov see this?

Or was the loan deal for the crocked Tullberg, the misguided attempt to obtain a loan deal for Riordan, and the penny-pinching loan deal request for Gow, the best Romanov could do?

I have a "technical problem" paying it.

Should be o.k. then?

I believe Lehmans Bank have written to creditors explaining that they too have a "technical problem" paying their bills.

Should be fine then.

Northern Rock shareholders believed that they had lost everything but hey what with a "technical problem" to explain all then the cash appears in their accounts.

I wouldnt question Mole,s workrate but its pointless for him careering around like he did yesterday so that when his chance did come with a run at last defender he was knackered and looking to get rid of the ball as soon as poss.
I do feel really sorry for him up front on his own because it looks to me now that his confidence is starting to wain.
He had a few opportunities to have instinctive cracks at goal yesterday but bottled them and played bad passes instead,i spotted Csaba at one point booting fresh air making a point to the lad to put his foot through it and have a crack.

ksanavicius should not be in the team.

tommytommy's sesame street ramblings serve no useful purpose to anyone but himself. nothing he says has any credible basis and therefore nobody at all places any belief in his witterings.

most posters posts comments that others will read, think about and either agree with or disagree with. here is also a lot of interaction between posters. tommytommy's berserk view of life ends up splashed all over this board but it's only really for his own benefit.

in the world of publishing, tommytommy would be one of those sad people who pay loads of money to have their 'novel' published by a 'vanity publisher'. nobody will ever buy a copy of the book but it's in print anyway and can be shown off to bored-to-tears friends and relatives.

Audry didn't look match sharp but he has had limited involvment so far and so i will give him the benefit of the doubt as Larry has been pretty poor in the hole up until now too. Audry made the goal and was sharp when he was needed to be most in my opinion so he gets pass marks.

People are missing the point about the defensive display i think as we are playing to our strengths here... If ICT had scored an equaliser would anyone be confident that we were going to go on and get another to win? i was not.

It is glaringly obvious to all that we need another striker and until we get one we will be winning games by one goal or drawing more often than not if we don't shut up shop at the back. I think Karapidis has proved a few people wrong about himself and I for one misjudged him when he was playing RB and I wrote him off as a player... I think he is actually a decent defensive midfielder.

One of the things i like about Csaba is that he seems to recognise the same factors as the fans do. I among others were saying that we needed larry out wide to compensate for the injured wingers and Audry in the hole... despite an overall tepid display from Audry he made the goal and larry was looking MUCH happier out wide, Miko's return was also telling and his attitude is much improved, I believe as a result of believing he has to work to get into the team now and not just sulk until vlad insists he is to play. If Nade and tullberg get fit then we will be able to play more attacking football but i for one thought we were extremely comfortable in defence yesterday and could not see ICT beating Kello and our defence.

How did a debt of £37 million appear without any sign of something being purchased.?

csaba is going to have to get a hold of kingston and drum it into him in no uncertain terms that he's been a greedy git and that he better stop having a dig at goal from 30 yards when there are better option available. 4 or 5 times he could have resisted temptation and played a simple pass and kept a move going. we'll never know but any one of those could have resulted in a goal which would have taken all the pressure off.

larry, have a ping every now and again, not every half chance you get.

I saw that episode, it was brought to us with the numbers 22 and 107, the letters H, M, F and C and TommyTommy made a cameo appearance. There was a bit later on where the two headed monster taught us how to say a word by breaking it up into two and then saying each one after the other while moving them closer together, it went like this...

Monster head one: "Bwa-haa-haa... delu..."

Monster head two: "Uuunghhh... ded..."

Monster head one: "Gaaaargh... Delu..."

Monster head two: "Urrrrghh... ded..."

Both together: "Agh-Ha-Ha... DELUDED!!!

#57 LF, yes kello is looking solid(ish). he almost made me have a heart attack when he came romping out to collect that throw at the end.

it probably wont be enough to stop the likes of NJ coming on tomorrow to plead for jamie macdonald, stevie banks or jim cruikshank to be given a chance.

when you've got kaunas on your CV it can ruin your rep in the eyes of some people. it means you must be getting picked by vlad above the gaffers head... apparently.

#60 bore us all, imagine that eh? hearts fans discussing a welcome win for our team on the website of an edinburgh based newspaper.

scandalous, innit?

I disagree with everything you always post, always, every time, forever.

Iam not going to mention NJ because mr bleeding heart gave me a right telling off for calling him a wrist-slitting doomonger.

Who cares if they do? I for one welcome the banter between the Hearts fans and I enjoy a laugh with other supporters too.

Ooh look two people who agree on something on a Hearts story, quick get 'Same Rules Apply' on the case he resents people getting on with each other as it reminds him that he doesn't have any mates.

BTW Neil Alexander trivia, I knocked his front tooth out in a game of basketball when we were teenagers.

#65 LF. no heart i'm afraid. i can confirm the rumour that i am in fact the tin man from the wizard of oz. i'm of to see the wizard to get a heart. i was found by dorothy and toto as they journeyed along the yellow brick road after a tornado hit their home in kaunas... sorry kansas.

Hi huggs, if you are on holiday then you could also try and watch the game in a pub by checking out the website 'Liveonsat.com' and it will tell you all the chanels that you can watch the games on... Some are pretty obscure and I've watche hearts games on Al Jazeera sports and Polestar sports etc on holiday before.

Also 'Justin TV' is worth a check as it provides streamed games over the net, You are better typing in the names of the teams on Google: Rangers v Motherwell eg and then click on the results that mention JustinTV.

Failing that you could try listen live on the BBC Scotland website

Huggs,

Take a note of the channels that it says the games are on on the Liveonsat website and take them to the various football pubs and ask them if they have the channels. They used to show the games via polish satelite TV (Nova and Polestar in some of the pubs in Scotland but they keep getting rumbled and reprimanded.

Dull one, me too. Radio Scotland website and use the listen now function might be the best option.

Hope to see Tullberg and Bruno come into contention for that game.

Jamboy,,

Edinburgh 21/09/2008 14:53:20
Huggs, if justinTV does not work or you need to listen and not watch as you work then follow this link...

"http://www.bbc.co.uk/radioscotland/index.shtml?survey=no&url=www.bbc.co.uk/radioscotland/index.shtml&site=radioscotland&js=yes&uid=0478337e59c31274f8934d1121bd60d2143f49bfe030b1078068542ce92eb3ba"

And then choose MW on 'radio shedule' and then 'listen now'. you need 'Real player' to get it working.

There are a lot of empty seats at ibrox too apparently.

I think Sutton will score for Motherwell but Rangers will win 2-1.

What did you go for in the predictor?

I went for Rangers 2-0 and Celtc to draw 1-1

I got 8 points yesterday but for some reason I can't view the Scotsman forum minileague, it keeps telling me thescotsmanforum is the wrong password.

I can't remember the password for the forum as it only asked me once and now I just have to click on 'view' on The Scotsman forum minileague.

I got 8 points yesterday too but it was due to my joker coming up on Falkirk/St Midden.

I went for 2-1 rangers and 1-3 celtic for today.

What is your predictor name and I'll let you know where you are in the league.

Nah I'm at work so just listening to Radio Scotland for the football.

Outside bets can make a big diference but you need to get a steady flow of points to stay in the mix I reckon.

0-0 halftime with Motherwell not overly tested... Lopez and Miller took sair yins. Few Well players on yellows so if Rangers don't score in the second half, I expect one or even two to walk to help them out.

That's bizzare BTO because I was in it yesterday morning, I am in the main league but not the Scorsman forum, I wonder if the minileague owner kicked me out? Oh and by the way it will only be 2 Rangers goals as I have a joker riding on it.
96

Hobo Harry,

21/09/2008 16:02:53
