Blaze wrecks bin lorries

POLICE are probing a half-a-million pound blaze which gutted five bin lorries and hampered rubbish collections across Midlothian.

Fire chiefs refuse to rule out foul play and are working with police to discover what sparked the blaze that wiped out a fifth of the council's refuse vehicles and a flat-top lorry in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Nineteen firefighters battled the blaze at Stobhill Road depot in Newtongrange for four hours. A special support unit was drafted in to help extinguish the fire in which fortunately no one was hurt.

Meanwhile, police today launched an appeal for witnesses to the blaze.

Midlothian Council was forced to draft in replacement vehicles in a bid to minimise disruption to collection services.
