Mother admits she lied about son’s death

MURDER accused Kimberley Hainey has admitted she lied when she told people her son Declan was alive.

She told prosecutor Andrew Stewart that she found Declan dead in his cot and said she could not explain why she had not called the police or ambulance service.

Hainey told the court yesterday that she lied to her mother, her aunt, neighbours and friends and talked about Declan as if he were still alive.

She claimed that after Declan’s death she took to drink and drugs and claimed she wanted to learn how to inject heroin so she could kill herself.

She sobbed as she said: “I wanted to die. I wanted to be buried with Declan. I wanted to learn to inject heroin and take an overdose.”

Hainey admitted lying to people about Declan still being alive after the summer of 2009.

She said: “I would talk about him. It was as if he was still here.

“I lied to everyone. I lied to myself. I wasn’t out to harm people or deceive them. I didn’t do anything to harm Declan.”

Hainey broke down in tears when she was shown a photographs of Declan by her defence QC Edward Targowski.

She was also shown another photograph taken at Xscape in Braehead which showed Declan sitting on a cloud with the words “Mummy’s little angel” written on it.

Hainey said: “It’s says ‘Mummy’s Little Angel’, that’s what was on his coffin as well.”

Mr Targowski then asked if there was an reason why Hainey’s mother did not come and visit her and Declan.

She replied: “No, it would have been easier. She expected me to go to her. All my life my mother has basically left me to get on with it.

“Why didn’t she come to me and say: ‘Why have I not seen him, are you OK?’ ”
