EU cash sought for carbon capture plan

A CARBON capture and storage (CCS) project at a gas-fired power station in Peterhead is one of two Scottish projects to apply for European funding for the technology.

The plan, previously mothballed, would see emissions from the existing plant, owned by Scottish and Southern Energy, stored under the sea. CCS is a new technology that experts hope could be used to stop large quantities of carbon emissions from being released into the atmosphere. A second application for funding was lodged by Ayrshire Power, for its planned Hunterston coal plant in North Ayrshire.
