Festival chief looks far east

Next year's Edinburgh International Festival will focus on the culture of India and China, it has been revealed. Festival director Jonathan Mills is leaving today to visit the two countries in the hope of booking acts and securing investment.

He will invite music, theatre and dance companies to come to the Capital for the festival, and it is hoped that support from the Indian and Chinese governments will help fund the festival, amid fears that the UK government will cut its funding by up to 15 per cent.

An EIF spokeswoman said: "The Jonathan Mills's vision each year has been to shift the focus outwards from Europe to explore more distant horizons and cultures."
