THE article by James McCormick, a practising Roman Catholic, was like a breath of fresh air (Opinion, 26 February). It is good to know there are open-minded people in the Church who will not only question but also, in some instances, reject some of the primitive teachings.

His support for a pragmatic approach to contraception in developing countries, especially where HIV-Aids is prevalent, is absolutely right. He could also have added the suffering and, in many cases, the death of children in the poorest countries as a consequence of their parents being denied the use of contraceptives by the Church.

He also raised the issue of the decades of abuse within the Church and the need to start a process of truth and reconciliation. This is long overdue. The Church has no moral authority to tell anyone in Britain what is right or wrong until it puts its own house in order.
