The students from Kreis Heinsberg, an area in the western district of Cologne, was twinned with Midlothian in 1973, which proved to be a point of interest for the teenagers during a recent field trip.
While the provost admitted his German wasn’t quite up to scratch, many of the 17 and 18-year-old visitors spoke in near-perfect English.

“We managed to have a great chat about our twinning with Heinsberg as well as how they are finding our wonderful country.
“Meeting young people like these students is a great opportunity for us to broaden our horizons and forge strong ties with other countries and cultures.”
