That half the sleeve notes are taken up with listing the contents of the 11 CDs in this boxed set suggests the variety of Marilyn Horne's output. That it ranges from bel canto opera via German lieder to an album called The Great American Songbook shows the extent of her talent.
Throughout these recordings, between 1964 and 1986, Horne never puts a foot wrong, so much so that criticism is almost superfluous. Fashion might suggest her 'J'ai Perdu Mon Eurydice' is taken too quickly and with insufficient shading, or that her Azucena is less vicious than she ought to be, but these are issues of interpretation and taste rather than skill.
Small wonder that Marilyn Horne was first choice when the Met started celebrating Met Legends. Delicious.
