Boxing: Tough time for boxers

CAPITAL boxers had mixed fortunes at the Scottish National Novices championships at Coatbridge.

Sparta lightweight Calum Vardy simply blew away Kilmarnock North-West opponent Jim Butcher in the first round of his semi- final but he suffered a similar fate in his final against Broadwood's Ryan McCabe.

Craigmillar light-welterweight fighter Lee Daykin lost on points to Coatbridge Barn's Sean McIntosh while there was an air of frustration and confusion for Sparta featherweight Mike Wood, Queensferry lightweight Lewis Paulin and Leith Victoria featherweight Jack Davies as they made their respective finals only to find that they had been "beaten by the bell" when time constraints meant that their bouts were postponed.
