DUNFERMLINE’S past heroes ran out victors in yesterday’s charity match at East End Park to mark the 30th anniversary this week of the death of legendary manager Jock Stein.

Managers for the day David Moyes and Murdo MacLeod led the teams – and the fans – in 30 seconds of applause in appreciation of Stein, who managed both clubs and who guided Celtic to become the first British winners of the European Cup in 1967.

Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon turned out for the Glasgow side, as did Jan Vennegooor of Hesselink and Stiliyan Petrov who, in recent years, has successfully fought a battle with acute leukaemia.

Meanwhile, Stevie Crawford, Barry Nicholson, Scott Thomson and Istvan Kozma were among the former Pars favourites on show.

A goalless first half nevertheless featured an excellent save by Marco Ruitenbeek to stop a fierce shot by Mark Burchill and, at the other end, Jonathan Gould brought off a brilliant save to deny Andy Tod’s header.

Celtic’s substitute ’keeper Rab Douglas was called upon to tip over a rocket from David Bingham after 64 minutes, but he was beaten a few moments later when John Watson drew Douglas off his line and slammed a shot into the far corner.

After 75 minutes, the home side wrapped up the scoring when Bingham found himself with plenty of time and space to place a shot past Douglas.

Another Tod header was saved and a Chris Sutton shot hit the bar in the dying moments.
