Judo: Starlet Mullen bidding for European glory in Sofia

Edinburgh judo player Jodie Mullen begins a month of top-class competition when she contests the 63kg event at the European Junior Championships in Sofia tomorrow.

The former Penicuik High School pupil will then make her World Cup debut in Birmingham before jetting off to the World Juniors in Morocco.

This weekend marks the high point of a breakthrough season for the 18-year-old, whose training regime at Judo Scotland's performance centre in Ratho has brought her the British under-20 title and the national team championship.

Her preparations could not have been more thorough, while dad Eddie - ninth at the 1972 Olympics in Munich - is always on hand to offer advice. Livingston's Samantha Clark, also based at Ratho, was the first Scot in action this morning. Clark won the 52kg class at this year's Northern Ireland Open and was fifth at the 2008 World Juniors in Bangkok.
