Speedway: Monarchs pay tribute to tragic Winkler
Edinburgh Monarchs are mourning the death of former rider Darrin Winkler, who was killed at Maryborough Speedway, Queensland, at the weekend, where he was attempting to make a comeback in the sport.
Winkler, 46, joined Monarchs in 1991 when the team were based at the city’s Powderhall Stadium, but despite enjoying success in his own country, the Australian struggled to adapt to UK circuits and was released before the end of the season.

Monarchs’ co-boss John Campbell said: “Everyone at the club is very sorry to hear about this tragedy which underlines once again the dangers of our sport.”
Meanwhile, Monarchs have virtually reached agreement to bring No. 1 Craig Cook back. Campbell said: “Everything should be sorted out within the next couple of days.”
